Perplexity visibility: get into the source list

Perplexity is the easiest AI surface to work on, because it shows its working. Every answer carries a numbered list of the pages it drew on, so you can see exactly who is being cited for a question, what those pages did to earn it, and whether your own position is moving. Nowhere else in AI search gives you that.

Who it is for: Businesses that want a testable starting point in AI search rather than a black box.

What is included

Everything in this service

  • A crawler access check for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User
  • A competitor read: who currently occupies the source list for your buying questions
  • A gap analysis of what those cited pages do that yours does not
  • Rewrites aimed at the specific questions the source list is answering
  • A monthly record of which links each answer carries, and where you sit in it
  • Follow-up question mapping, because Perplexity suggests the next question and that shapes the journey
Outcomes

What to expect

  • A written record of who is cited for the questions your buyers ask
  • A clear reason why, rather than a guess
  • Pages built to answer the specific question the source list is answering
In detail

How perplexity visibility actually works

Why a visible source list changes the work

Most AI visibility work is inference. You improve the inputs, wait, and hope the output moves, with no way to see what the engine considered. Perplexity removes most of that uncertainty by publishing the pages behind each answer.

That turns the job into something closer to conventional competitive analysis. You can see which page won a question, open it, and read what it did. Very often the cited page is not a stronger site than yours. It is a page that answered the exact question in its first two sentences while yours discussed the topic in general.

It also makes the work arguable with a client. A screenshot of a source list that does not include you is a clearer brief than any ranking report, and a later one that does is clearer evidence than a traffic graph.

Follow-up questions are part of the journey

Perplexity suggests the next question after each answer, and people click them. That means a buying journey here is a chain rather than a single query, and the pages cited at each step are not necessarily the same ones.

Working this properly means mapping the chain rather than optimizing one question. The definitional question at the start and the comparison question three steps later have different winners, and the business that appears at several points in the chain is the one the reader ends up trusting.

Practically, that argues for covering adjacent questions properly rather than concentrating everything on one commercial page. It is the same reasoning behind topic clusters in search, arriving at the same conclusion by a different route.

  • Map the chain, not the single question
  • Definitional, comparison and cost questions usually have different winners
  • Appearing at several steps matters more than winning one
How we work

A clear path, step by step

  1. 01

    Read the source list

We run your buying questions and record every page Perplexity cites. This is a competitor analysis you can do in an afternoon and almost nobody does.

  2. 02

    Work out what earned it

We read the cited pages and identify the pattern: what they answer, how directly, and how early. Usually the answer is less flattering to the incumbent than expected.

  3. 03

    Build the better answer

We write or rewrite the page that should be in that list, aimed at the exact question rather than at the topic in general.

  4. 04

    Watch the list change

Monthly re-runs, logged. Because the sources are visible, progress here is visible too.

Why The Visibility Bureau

Why choose us for this

We start where the evidence is visible, because it makes the rest of the work arguable

We read the cited competitors rather than assuming they are stronger than you

Honest about scale: Perplexity sends fewer visits than search, and we say so upfront

Questions

Common questions

Does allowing Perplexity mean my content trains an AI model?

Not according to its documentation. Perplexity states that PerplexityBot is used to surface and link websites in its search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. That makes it an unusually simple decision compared with other assistants, where the same choice affects both training and citation.

Source Perplexity: PerplexityBot (opens in a new tab) “PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity. It is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.”

Why start with Perplexity rather than ChatGPT?

Because you can see the answer. Perplexity lists its sources under every response, so you can identify exactly which pages are being cited for a question and read them. That turns AI visibility from a guessing game into an ordinary competitive analysis. The lessons usually transfer to the other assistants, which are far harder to observe.

How much traffic will this actually send?

Less than search, and anyone promising otherwise is guessing. The value is that the visit arrives already briefed: the person has read a summary that named you and chose to click through anyway. If your sales problem is volume at the top of the funnel, this is a poor fit and I will say so.

My competitor is in the source list and I am not. What is the actual reason?

Usually one of three, and they are checkable in that order. Your page cannot be fetched or needs JavaScript to show its content. Or it can be read but does not answer the question directly enough to quote. Or the question is being answered by a page type you do not have, such as a comparison or a definition, rather than by a service page.

How this is delivered

One person leads every project. Where a job genuinely needs a specialist, I bring in people I have worked with before and manage them, so you get one point of contact and one invoice rather than three suppliers blaming each other.

  • You talk to the person responsible for the work, not an account manager
  • Specialists are briefed and managed by me, and their work is checked before it reaches you
  • One contract, one invoice, one place to chase
