AEO vs SEO: what is the difference in 2026?
By The Visibility Bureau Updated
TL;DR
- SEO gets a page ranked. AEO gets its content pulled out and shown as the answer above the results.
- They are layers, not alternatives. AEO sits on an SEO foundation rather than replacing it.
- Google states its AI features run on core Search ranking, so there is no separate track to buy.
- What makes a page extractable is what makes it useful: state the answer, then explain it.
- Most of the difference is in how you write and structure a page, not in what you buy.
Short answer
SEO is the work of getting a page ranked among the results. AEO is the work of getting its content lifted out and shown as the direct answer above them. They share one foundation, so you do not choose between them. You build the foundation once, then add the answer layer.
SEO and AEO are not competing strategies. SEO, search engine optimization, gets your pages ranked in Google and Bing. AEO, answer engine optimization, makes your content the direct answer that features like Google AI Overviews extract and show above those results.
The confusion is worth clearing up, because a lot of money is currently being spent on the assumption that one replaces the other. It does not.
What is SEO actually optimizing for?
SEO is the work of being one of the results. That means being reachable by a crawler, being relevant to what someone searched, loading quickly enough not to be abandoned, and being trusted enough to be preferred over the other pages competing for the same query.
The output is a position. Position one gets a lot of clicks, position eight gets some, position twenty gets almost none. The whole discipline is built around moving up that list, and for twenty years that list was the entire product.
What is AEO, and how is it different?
AEO is the work of being the answer rather than one of the options. When Google shows an AI Overview, or a featured snippet, or reads a response aloud, it is pulling a passage out of a page and presenting it as the answer. AEO is making sure that passage comes from you.
The difference is subtle in practice and large in outcome. A page can rank third and never be extracted, because the answer is buried under three paragraphs of positioning. A page can rank eighth and be extracted constantly, because it states the answer in its first line.
That is really the whole idea. Ranking is about which pages are eligible. Extraction is about which sentence is easiest to lift.
Where does GEO fit in?
GEO, generative engine optimization, is the same job aimed at assistants rather than at Google: being quoted and credited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini a question.
The terms are newer than the practice and nobody agrees on their edges. Some practitioners use AEO and GEO interchangeably, and at least one vendor in this market has published an argument that they describe the same thing. The split below is useful for deciding what work to do, not a definition the industry has settled on.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO, side by side
| What it wins | What the page needs | Where you see it | |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | A position in the results | Crawlable, fast, relevant, linked to by others | The ten blue links |
| AEO | The extracted answer above them | The answer stated plainly, near the top, in its own block | AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice |
| GEO | A citation inside an assistant reply | Readable without JavaScript, specific, consistent about who you are | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini |
Read the middle column and the point becomes obvious: the requirements stack. Nothing in the AEO row is possible if the SEO row is not already true, because a page that cannot be crawled cannot be extracted either.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No, and Google has been unusually direct about this. Its guidance on generative features states that its AI features are built on the same systems as ordinary Search:
our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems
That single sentence settles most of the argument. There is no separate AEO ranking system to be optimized for. The work that makes you eligible to rank is the work that makes you eligible to be summarized.
The same page is equally direct about the tooling being sold around this:
You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities), as Google Search itself doesn’t use them.
If someone is quoting you for AI-specific files or markup as the mechanism for appearing in AI answers, that is the sentence to show them.
What actually changes about how you write a page
Almost everything that differs between SEO and AEO lives in structure and phrasing rather than in technology.
Answer first, then explain. Open each section with the direct answer in one or two sentences, then expand. This is the single highest-value habit, and it costs nothing.
Make each passage survive being lifted. The test: take any paragraph out of the page, show it to someone with no context, and see whether it is still true and complete. If it needs the paragraph above it, an engine quoting it will produce something misleading, and engines avoid passages that do that.
Use the question as the heading. A heading is a strong boundary. A heading that is already a question makes the text under it an answer, which is exactly the shape an extraction is looking for.
Use a table when the answer is a comparison. Prose describing four options across three attributes is hard to read and harder to extract. A table is neither.
Be specific enough to be checkable. Vague claims are not quotable, because quoting them commits the engine to nothing. Numbers, names, dates and concrete processes are.
What does not work, whatever you have been told
This part of the subject has an unusually poor evidence base. Several precise-sounding statistics circulate widely and trace back to vendor blogs citing each other rather than to any primary source.
Two things worth knowing before you buy anything:
Publishing an llms.txt file does not improve your visibility in Google. Google states plainly that it ignores the file:
Doing so will neither harm nor help your site’s visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them.
Schema markup does not get you into AI answers. It is worth adding, because it makes you eligible for rich results and removes ambiguity about who you are. Those are real benefits. Being cited by an AI assistant is not one Google has claimed for it, and its documentation says no special structured data is needed for its AI features.
Neither of these means the underlying work is pointless. It means the mechanism being sold is not the mechanism that operates.
How do you measure each one?
They need different instruments, and this catches people out.
SEO has mature measurement. Rankings, impressions, clicks and the queries behind them are all available in Search Console, and the numbers are reasonably stable.
AEO and GEO do not have an equivalent yet. The answer varies between users, sessions and phrasings, so one check is an anecdote rather than a measurement. What works in practice is a fixed set of prompts, run on a schedule, recording three things: whether you were named, how you were described, and which sources the answer drew on.
The description matters as much as the mention. Being named inaccurately is a fixable problem, but only once you know it is happening.
Which should you do first?
The foundation, every time. Being crawlable, fast and genuinely relevant is prerequisite to both, so there is no version of this where you skip it to chase the newer acronym.
A workable order:
- Fix reachability. If a crawler cannot fetch and read the page, nothing else matters.
- Fix relevance. Make sure the page targets a question people actually ask.
- Restructure for extraction. Answer first, question headings, tables where they fit.
- Fix the entity. Same name, same details, everywhere you appear.
- Measure both, separately, and keep measuring.
Steps one and two are SEO. Steps three and four are what people are calling AEO and GEO. Step five is how you find out whether any of it worked.
The honest summary
AEO is not a new industry. It is a set of writing and structuring habits that became valuable when search engines started answering questions instead of just listing pages, sitting on top of technical work that has not changed much in a decade.
Anyone selling it as a replacement for SEO is selling a story. Anyone selling it as a file you can upload is selling something Google has publicly said it ignores. The real work is less exciting than either pitch and considerably more durable.
